Case study

Helping When In Rome fill their Frugal Bottle wine

Working closely with FrugalPac, Skanvin took on the challenge of automating the filling process of the delicate and unique Frugal Bottle, becoming the first European partner to do so.

Embracing the challenge

Technical skills and an open mind paved the way for the development of an innovative packaging solution

In collaboration with When In Rome and Frugalpac, Skanvin undertook a bold initiative to rebuild our bottle-filling line for the delicate Frugal Bottle.

When In Rome, a UK wine brand with a vision to “decarbonise the wine industry” encountered a hurdle while trying to expand its range of wines bottled in the eco-friendly Frugal Bottle by Frugalpac.

When In Rome had won some attractive listings in the competitive UK market and was looking for a partner to scale the production, as the manual filling processes in Italy and Spain was short on capacity and expensive.

Working closely with Frugalpac, Skanvin took on the challenge of automating the filling process, becoming one of the first European filling operations to do so.

The investment enabled a substantial scaling of the filling process to address the inefficiencies in the existing manual process, offering a more cost-effective solution.

Results

“We rebuild an existing filling machine recognizing the distinctive nature of the Frugal Bottle. We had to change the configuration of the filler heads addressing the challenges of filling in light-weighted paper bottle with a bag inside” says Production Manager Søren Nielsen

The collaborative efforts of Skanvin and Frugalpac resulted in a more streamlined production process for When In Rome. The elimination of manual processes also improved the product quality and shelf life.

The synergy between the disruptive mindset of When In Rome, the innovative packaging concept from Frugalpac and the Skanvin technical filling know-how has not only broadened choices for environmentally conscious consumers but also set the scene for sustainable packaging solutions in the wine industry.
